WPGMHA AGM Attendance register 18 May 2026-compressed
Adoption of the minutes of the AGM of the WPGMHA held at WPCC on 5 May 2025. Adoption proposed by Steve Dugmore and seconded by Brent Conbrink.
Karl Luff, with assistance from Noreen Wanacott, presented a two-part historical overview tracking the growth of Western Province (WP) Grand Masters.
The first era, from 2010 to 2018, began with a highly successful inaugural tournament at Hartleyvale under the club’s first Chairman, Moir Scholtz. This foundational period included notable international tours to Oxford and The Hague, alongside crucial foundational work from pioneers Rob Birt and John Donald.
The second era marked a phase of rapid expansion and structural maturity despite the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. WP launched its first Summer League in 2020 and subsequently grew its membership from 60 to 162 players by late 2024, aided by the introduction of our first ladies’ team. WP Grand Masters has demonstrated competitive and structural dominance, securing undefeated league titles in Gqeberha and fielding three full 55+ teams alongside the historic debut of the first WP Ladies Over 60s team in KZN.
Danny St Dare thanked Karl for his tremendous efforts from the floor.
Previously circulated by Warren Machanik, who highlighted the following key points:
The proposed constitutional changes previously circulated to members were proposed for adoption.
Resolution: The changes were unanimously approved by the floor without objection, giving the committee the authority to update the Constitution document.
As only a single nomination was received for each portfolio, no formal ballot was required. The incoming committee for the 2026/2027 cycle was confirmed:
| Portfolio | Name |
|---|---|
| Chair | Warren Machanik |
| Treasurer | Grant Irlam |
| Secretary | Peter Kratz |
| Player Affairs | Gary Frayne |
| Support Player Affairs | Steve Dugmore |
| Player Affairs | Wendy Payne |
| Support Playing Affairs | Elvira Ryan |
| Governance Officer | Derek Mc Mahon |
A group photograph of the incoming committee was taken. There being no further business, the meeting was declared closed at approximately 21h30.
As part of our ongoing commitment to keeping the Western Province Grand Masters community informed, WPGM is pleased to share the official communication from the SA Masters Hockey Association regarding the final squad selections for the 2026 World Masters Hockey World Cup, to be hosted in the Netherlands and Belgium.
The announcement outlines the rigorous selection process, acknowledges the dedication of all players who participated, and congratulates those chosen to represent South Africa on the world stage. It also highlights the important work carried out by the selectors and coaches, and offers encouragement to those who narrowly missed out.
Below, you will find a link to the full PDF of the official announcement for members to read or download.
We have also included the team lists (from the second PDF) for easy reference.

This has been updated please refer to the update:
It’s springtime! We’re kicking off our September–October Series, and this one’s a big deal—it’s the official selection process for the upcoming IPT (Inter-Provincial Tournament).
To be considered for an IPT squad, you’ll need to play in at least three out of the five matches. So, mark these dates on your calendar:
The teams will be split into age groups:
Our selectors — John Shardlow and Nadine Dalling, with support from Dave McKechnie, Jigger Halkett, and Ally du Plooy — will be watching closely. Selectors will not select in a team for which they are eligible to play.
Teams will be announced in the first week of November.
Get ready for some fast-paced, competitive hockey! We’ll be playing half-field matches with smaller teams, focusing on building our short-game skills and fitness. This isn’t about winning or losing—it’s about showcasing your talent in a competitive setting.
On each of the evenings:
Teams within age groups won’t be static—this gives us the flexibility to manage numbers and make sure everyone gets a chance to play.
Your age group admin will be in touch to confirm your availability for each match and keep you in the loop. Your admin will contact all players who signed up for SL and IPT by Wednesday, 10 September.
If you have not let us know you are keen to play Summer League or be considered for the IPT, please do that now.
🔁 Remember to bring both a white and a dark (black) shirt to every game.
In other exciting news, our Summer League is right around the corner! The season is set to start on Wednesday, 16 October, and we’re aiming to have all seven teams finalised by the third week of September.
We can’t wait to see everyone out on the field—let’s have a great series!

SA Masters Hockey Association – August 2025
SA Masters Hockey is aligning its policies and procedures across all age categories (35+ to 75+) for the 2026 World Cup. A uniform approach to selection and preparation will ensure consistency and success.
We will no longer distinguish between over and under 60 teams for international competition, though selection methods will be tailored to each age group.
A single SA Masters Selection Committee has been formed to oversee the process. It reports directly to the President and coordinates with selectors and coaches to ensure fairness and quality.
