Confirmation of Points Following Meeting About Issues on the Field 30 Nov 2023

Dear Fellow Members,

Thank you to all those who attended the meeting on Thursday 30 November 2023 and for your support and encouragement.

Western Province Grand Masters Hockey Association (WPGMHA) aims to promote the highest standards of hockey, behavior, and conduct for its members and participants, both on and off the field of play. To this end, all participants (players, umpires, coaches, physios, and administrators) are bound to comply with the FIH rules of hockey, the WPGM Constitution, and the WPGM Code of conduct. The committee wishes to confirm a number of salient points discussed in the meeting.

  1. PLAY TO THE RULES:
    1. Play to the rules of FIH Hockey as amended from time to time. See copy here.
    2. The rules will be enforced.
  2. EACH TEAM TO APPOINT A CAPTAIN:
    1. Each team must appoint a captain and a replacement captain (for when the captain is off the field of play).
    2. Captains must wear distinctive armbands.
    3. Captains are responsible for the behavior and conduct of ALL the players in their team, both on and off the field of play.
    4. If a captain does not exercise these responsibilities, a personal penalty may be awarded to that team’s captain.
  3. QUESTIONING AN UMPIRE’S DECISION:
    1. Only captains may question an umpire’s decision.
    2. No captain, nor team player may
      • Charge the umpire.
      • Show hand gestures towards the umpire.
      • Use intimidating, abusive language, or derogatory tones towards the umpire.
      • Use or throw a stick in an aggressive manner.
    3. Any transgressions of the above will result in a personal penalty, the severity of which is stated in the FIH rules of hockey and the FIH Code of Conduct.
  4. BEHAVIOR AND CONDUCT:
    1. Each participant is responsible for their own behaviour and conduct.
  5. ACCUMULATION OF PERSONAL PENALTIES:
    1. Personal penalties (cards) as issued will be cumulatively recorded. Players who cross the FIH recommended threshold in a season may be upgraded to a higher level, possibly resulting in suspension.
  6. FAIR PLAY INCENTIVE:
    1. A team fair play incentive is to be introduced, where teams will be judged after each match as to the spirit in which the game is played, cooperation, aggression, etc. Full details will be released by the committee shortly. An incentive award will be given to the team with the highest rating at the end of each season.

FOR THE LOVE OF HOCKEY,
YOUR COMMITTEE

WPGMHA November updates – MOU, Meeting and IPT 2024

There are 3 items of news.

1. MOU

Dear WPGM Members please find attached the signed Memorandum of understanding that has been put forward by the sub-committee in charge of producing it. It is now signed, and it is available for you to request amendments or approve. In the new year we will have a meeting to finalise any amendments and then the members can approve the MOU. Contact the committee to get a copy.

2. Meeting about on the park issues.

Some members have approached the committee about problems on the park. We want to fix these problems. Hence, we request you to attend a meeting next week on November 30, 2023. The meeting will happen after the last game on Thursday the 30th at 8:45 PM. We hope the meeting will be short. If you have something to say, please keep it short and to the point.

Let’s solve these problems and make sure we all have fun playing Grand Masters.

3. IPT availability for March 2024

We are required to submit the number of teams that will be going to IPT 21-24 March 2024. Please complete form available via the button to help us determine the number of teams we will be sending.

Reminder re 2024 WC registration date

Below please find an important update and revision of the registration date for the Cape Town 2024 Masters Hockey World Cup.

It is essential that all Provincial players, some of whom may not have, as yet, registered for the 2024 WC.

Those who have not registered have two months to do so.

To those who have registered I have confirmed by email their registration.

Another email will be sent towards the end of October confirming those who register during October.

Revision of Players Registration date

This is an update on an important date regarding the 2024 Cape Town World Cup.

You may recall that in Newsletter 3 it was pointed out that those players who were interested in participating in Cape Town Masters World Cup 2024, in age groups 65 to 80, are required to access and complete the APPLICATION LINK B in that newsletter.

The original player registration deadline was 31 January 2024 and the commitment fee of R500.00 was to be paid to SAGMH bank account no later than 31 January 2024.

It is important to note that we are required to register our RSA teams for the Cape Town World Cup with World Masters Hockey by the 29th February 2024.

A payment amount of R19200.00 per team, must accompany this registration.

Knowing this requires us to firm up the number of teams we are going to register for the World Cup 2024; information which is derived from player registration on the registration links explained and provided in the Newsletter Number 3, link copied below for convenience.

APPLICATION LINK B TO REGISTER FOR Cape Town World Cup 2024 https://forms.gle/a6Pb3Rbi8EEBrygx5

To date the players who have registered for the Cape Town World Cup, per team number:

  • +65: 32 players
  • +70: 21 players
  • +75: 15 players
  • Total : 68 players

If these numbers increase we may be able to field two +65 teams.

For this reason and to meet the requirement to register our teams with World Masters  our player registration closing date is being  brought forward to 30th November 2023.

Those players who have not registered thus far therefore have October and November to decide if they wish to be considered for selection.

To this end I am also attaching the 3rd Newsletter which has the player registration link and other information you may find useful circulating.

A 4th Newsletter will be published in October 2023.

Please communicate this revised date to all your players thereby giving them a reminder and a “heads up” on the earlier FINAL registration date: 30th November 2023

The commitment fee of R500.00 remains to be affected and reflected in the SAGMHA bank account no later than 31 January 2024.

WPGMHA Summer League 2023/24 notification

Hi all,

There will be 6 teams again. However, the one team will be made up of ladies who are part of a few upcoming competitions. They will wear blue. All players that were in the Blue team have been moved to other teams. This was the one team with the fewest regulars, so that is why these players moved.

All players that are allocated to teams will receive an email today about the team they are allocated to. If you receive no such email, and you asked to be part of the league then please contact me at secretary@wpgm.co.za

Payment

If you selected “All games” or “All games” as part of your response to the league questionnaire, please pay R980 into the WPGM account. Otherwise please pay R490 into the account, with the same reference. Please use your name and Summer League 23-4 as reference. Please contact Noreen or me if you would like financial assistance to settle this. We have a pay-for-a-player fund that we can use for this.

WPGM Hockey Update Sep 2023

With just a few games left in the winter league, it is time for an update.

6 teams going forward

Despite some comments from some players, most of the admins and players have been positive about the move to 6 teams. Except for the blue team, most of the teams have typically had full teams with players allocated to that team, for most of the games. This is a significant gain, considering that at the beginning of the winter league, people were complaining of no game time. We feel this has worked, thanks to the admins and Gary Frayne putting in a few hours, all the games have had 11 or more players on each side.

We have had a few injuries from IPT, and some people have been away, so will do a small shuffle of the sides based on the answer provided in the survey, you can answer below (at the bottom).

Furthermore, we are also keen to see new players. So spread the word. Remember for the first game a player is the guest of the person inviting them, and then they are allocated a team.

Summer League 23-24

We have exciting news about the upcoming Summer League, which is set to begin in the first week of October.

We’ve secured three time slots on Thursdays at WPCC: 18:15, 19:15, and 20:15. All our games will be held at WPCC.

Please note that we will no longer offer a payment-per-game option due to management challenges. Instead, we will only have a payment-per-season system. The specific amounts will be confirmed in a future league update.

Availability for Summer League 23-24

We are keen to know your availability for the upcoming Summer League. To provide your availability, please complete the form before September 8th by clicking the link provided below.

Thank you for your continued support and participation in the WPGM Hockey League! Your feedback and engagement are essential in making our league better.

SAGMHA Newsletter No 3 of 2023

As the year moves on, we are getting closer to the African Masters Invitational Series and of course the 2024 Masters World Cups.

You have already received 2 “Grandmasters” newsletters from Barry and me this year.

We have also circulated SA Masters Newsletters when they have been sent to us.

Below please find our 2023 3rd Grandmasters Newsletter.

Once you read the newsletter you will notice that players have two options to consider when registering for either of these two tournaments or for both of them.

There are two links to use for REGISTRATION for either or both the African Cup or the 2024 World Cup.

Please distribute this newsletter to all of your players/members and request that they give it careful consideration and complete the links.

Please encourage your players to read the newsletter fully before going back to the links to make their choice/s.

We look forward to a positive and enthusiastic response.

Thank you for your assistance in distributing this email and its newsletter.

Kind regards

Rob

Final update before we start Winter League with six teams – July 2023

Hi all,

By now, you should have been contacted about the games next week when we move to 6 teams. The fixtures and teams are now live on the website, so you can view them. The website for those who are not sure is https://wpgm.co.za.

A final few things:

  • A note about goalies
  • How subs/allocations work
  • Notes about payment

Note about Goalies

We currently anticipate that the goalies may need to double up. Dereck is not available until August, and one of the goalies has limited availability. Gary Frayne will work with the goalies available to allocate a goalie per team for each game. Team admins must work with Gary to sort this out.

Notes about subs

As before, we will substitute like-for-like players should teams be short. With several players having issues on Wednesday, and the average number of players per team now just above 15, we expect that we may need a few subs for some games. If your team has a fixture Wednesday and you would like to play as a sub in the Monday game, please notify your team admin. The same applies to Wednesdays. Around 2 players per team had issues with Wednesdays, so we may need some players playing on Monday to sub for any teams that are short on Wednesday.

Team admins, please work with Gary if they are short.

Notes about payment

If you pay upfront, you will be given the discount of the equivalent of R60 per scheduled game, rather than the R65 per game. Any player that pays up front will not need to pay if they fill in on the day that their team is not scheduled to play. If you are paying per game, then you need to pay R65 per game played regardless.

When paying PLEASE use the reference name/WLeague2, if you want to send a POP it must go to Noreen at nwonnie@gmail.com NOT to Rob Birt.

Just a summary of what is due:

  • If you paid for the full Winter League already, pay R360
  • If you have not paid anything, then it is R65 x the number of games played. Should you then want to pre-pay for the next Winter league games then pay R600

If you want to contribute to the pay-for-a-mate, you can top up your payment and add PFM to the reference or pay separately.

If you need any financial assistance, then email Noreen with your reason and she will respond.
