Planned visit by an Over 75 men’s team to Cape Towns

While at the World Cup in Tokyo Barry was approached by Neil Coster, an Australian
Hockey representative, to discuss the possibility of an over 75 National Australian team travelling to Cape Town  and playing hockey against a National South African over 75 team.
Neil and Barry have continued to communicate with each other on various aspects of
their planned visit to South Africa including firming up dates, number of games, venues
etc.
They plan to visit Cape Town during March 2023 and would also like to bring an over
70 National ladies team.(More details to follow soonest) They will probably play in the
Cape Town IPT in March but we are still trying to establish if they will be travelling to the
other Provinces.
Our National Over 75 South African team will be recognised as such and wear South
African colours.
Those eligible players on our data base and who are still playing hockey have been asked
if they would like to be considered for selection. Their initial response has been positive
and once numbers are confirmed by 5th December a selection process will be
implemented.
Although we tried, without success, to get an over 75 team to Tokyo the possibilities of
fielding a team against Australia, here at home, are significantly better.
Costs are going to be reasonable and will include camps in preparation, travel and
accommodation in Cape Town.

Costs to attend the IPT

The cost of hosting the annual IPT is budgeted by the hosting Province. This usually
requires paying for up to 18 different line items, including the hire of the Astros, the use
of local Club facilities, medical staff, umpires, technical tables, the Saturday dinner with
music, photographer etc. The W Province organising committee have budgeted for a
tournament levy of R650 per player which must be paid to your local Provincial Treasurer.
Provinces will be required to lodge a non-refundable per team entry deposit of
R1500.00 no later than 13 January 2023.
Provincial Treasurers are required to pay the total of the player’s levies before 28th
February 2023.
A list of names of players, in age groups and teams, attending the IPT must be attached
to the proof of payment.

Note: If a team withdraws once the levies have been effected, there will be no refund as
the budget is based on a fixed number of teams and players.

Capitation Fees

SAGMHA is funded by the collection of members’ annual fees. (Capitation/Subscription
Fees).  These fees cover the organisation’s annual running costs. The Annual SAGMHA
Player Capitation/Subscription Fees are determined by the fixed and variable expenses
that are incurred by SAGMHA for the sole purpose of the efficient operations of SAGMHA.
These fees are due no later than the 28th February of each Financial Year. The Provinces
are accountable to ensure that these fees are collected and that payment is effected to
the SAGMHA Bank Account not the Provincial account. The annual capitation fee is R330
while players in the +55 age group pay R110.00 capitation fee. For those players over 75
the Capitation fee is waived.
Capitation Payments must be accompanied with a list of all the Ladies and Men’s
players’ names inclusive of their age category.
SAGMHA will forward the annual capitation fees players list to Western Province for
tournament levy reconciliation purposes.
The principle of & no pay/no play & will apply both in terms of Tournament levy and the
Capitation Fee.

WPGM GM Summer League 2022-23

Staying with 5 teams

Currently, the WP GM Status is as follows:

  • 8 players are only available from Jan 2023
  • 7 players are not able to commit to each game, and
  • 6 players have pulled out (due to injury, emigration etc.).
  • 7 new players since winter league 2022

Accordingly, we currently have only 73 players committed to the WP grand masters summer league 22 / 23. The outcome is that we are staying with the current 5 team structure. A few players will be shuffled around to balance the sides further and to accommodate the 6 new players that have joined us since Winter League. We will reassess the situation in late December.

Administration and player assignment

Thanks to those that put their hands up to assist with the admin. As a result, some of the admins will also change.

Deon will be managing the team lists from now on. Thanks to Gary for doing it the last few seasons.

Each admin will be sent a team list of the players in their team. The admin is responsible for getting availability from the team member for the games before Tuesday morning. A team list must be posted in the admin group, which Deon will use to determine if reserves need to be allocated. Any team that has a bye, the admins must notify Deon with a list of who is available as reserves. Those players will be assigned to a team before the players who advised us they are only available for some games.

Fixtures

The Fixtures until 2023. We will play on the B field at 18:30 and the A field at 19:30.

Games for Thursday 27 Oct 2022

Since we are waiting for our Grand Masters world cup players to return and have pending answers from new players, we will have friendly games this week.

Because the white team had the majority of the World cup players in it, they will have a bye. So we will play Black V Blue and Red v Yellow on Thursday.

18:30 Black V Blue

19:30 Red V Yellow

Both are on the WPCC A pitch.

New teams will be selected once we start the real league

Last weeks of September 2022 update of WPGMHA

For the rest of September, here is a breakdown of the Grand Master Hockey Association.

Next week is a catchup game from when we had load shedding. It is the last league game.
12 Sept 2022 18:30 – Red V Black
12 Sept 2022 19:30 – White V Blue

Then the last 2 weeks of September there are 2 friendlies. With World cups and other competitions we suspect that a number of players will not be available, so if you do not see your team here, that week, please tell your admin if you are available. We will run larger benches if required.

Please note that these games are not included in the league fee paid. So please pay R60/game into the Western Province Hockey Association bank account. When you can.

The fixtures for the friendlies are:

19 Sept 18:30 – White V Red
19 Sept 19:30 – Yellow V Black
26 Sept 18:30 – Blue V Yellow
26 Sept 19:30 – Black V White

Update on league times and a request July 2022

Last night we met Chris Boyes from WPCC to discuss the scheduling issues around the Grand Masters Hockey league. The result of this discussion: from the beginning of September, league games will be allocated the 18:15 slot we had typically been assigned. We will also keep these time slots for Summer League (our old Thursday slot). We will return to the 19:15 time slot on the 24th July.

Of importance is that they want to know how many Grand Masters are members of WPCC.

We need you to help

It would help us if you could complete the form below, so we can assess how many members there are and if they are actively still playing sport or just members. click here… to complete the form.

Update for WP Grand Masters June 2022

With the season heading for its third round, please find a few updates WRT to the league.

Ladies joining the sides

On Monday, we will have two ladies joining the sides. They are part of the team going to the Grand Master’s World Cup, and we will be allocating them to a team that requires players. Gary will assign them to teams. Thanks to Glyn for sending us their names.

Umpires and respect

We have had several instances on the field with players questioning umpire decisions. We all know that only a captain can make a polite enquiry to the umpire. Henceforth, any on-field questioners will be shown a green card and asked to take time off the field.

We appreciate that we all enjoy the competition, but we prefer not to have a few players upset the umpires or fellow players.

We will be organising captains’ bands that will need to be worn by the captain on the night. In the meantime, can the captains please present themselves to the umpires before each game.

Respect to fellow players, especially the more senior players

A proposal was made to have the senior players wear some sort of band or clothing to be easily identifiable. After receiving feedback from the senior players, this suggestion has been declined. However, we call on all players to respect one another on the field.

Request for involvement in next year’s GM IPT in Cape Town

In 2023 around mid-March, Cape Town will be hosting the SA Grandmasters IPT. We are keen to have any of our current members on board as part of the organisation committee. If you are interested in assisting, don’t hesitate to contact Karl or Warren.

IPT Warmup games

IPT warmup games will begin Monday 28th Feb. We are busy finalising times and games. The proposal is that we play on both the A and B field. The one starting at 18:30 the other 19:00. This will give the physio time to warmup and cool down the players per field. Once we have finalised the time the fixtures will be published. The relevant managers will need to organise their teams and be there on the night to coach and manager their side.

All players that are not going to IPT but would like to have a run notify Gary at garybarrett500@gmail.com, who will allocate you to a team. We cannot guarantee that everyone not going gets a run but will try.
