WPGMHA – 2021 AGM Notice, Committee Nomination AND Notice of Change to the Constitution

The 2021 AGM will be held at WPCC 2 December 2021. The games for the night have been organised such that we all play together (except the Red team, who will have a bye). The games start at 18:15. The AGM will begin 19:45, after which there will be boerewors rolls served as an end of season celebration.

Please find below, the notice of AGM, a nomination form and changes to the constitution.

GM Summer League Nov-Dec 2021 and updates

5-week league

A short summer league for Grand Masters commences 4 Nov. The last fixture in this league will be 2 Dec. As before, there are 5 teams and 4 play each week, and one has a bye. Teams and fixtures are listed below and also on the website wpgm.co.za.

Costs! It really helps with the admin if people pay upfront. Thanks to all who do this. If you pay upfront for the 4 games, you pay R220, and if you fill in for a team on a day they have a bye, you do not pay for that game. Otherwise, for those that still prefer to pay per game, the rate is R60 per game. Please make sure you retain the proof of payment for per game payment to track it.

Oct 2021 Update: SAGMHA OVER 60’s Hockey Players-Availability for 55’s or 60’s

From Barry Chairman of the SAGM Hockey:

I has come to my attention that many 60+ male players(those have attended the Over 55 trials and who intend attending the Over 60 trials) will wait and see for which age group team they are selected.

Whereas players are entitled to choose their age group team of choice the above practice has serious ramifications on the following:

  • Role Of The Selectors at next week’s IPT.
  • Final Squad Selection for the Camp in Durban prior to the SAGMHA IPT(Selectors will need to select and indicate the probable and possible players at the forthcoming IPT, prior to the Durban IPT.)In addition to this, we need to include all the paid up players who have applied for dispensation in the forthcoming squad list.
  • Selecting a 60+Team for the November 2021  African Cup

It would be unfair  for committed 60+ players to not be included in the squad in view of players who may or may not be available for the 60+ team and to then request their availability in February 2022.

We will not include an unlimited number of players in the squad and if it was not for the COVID related issues the final selection would have taken place this forthcoming IPT.

I THERFORE REQUIRE AND NOT LATER THAN 17:00 HOURS ON MONDAY 11 OCTOBER 2021 A LIST OF THE 60+ AGE GROUP PLAYERS WHO INTEND TO MAKE THEMSELVES AVAILABLE FOR SELECTION FOR BOTH THE 55+ AND 60+ S.A.TEAMS.

THE LIST NEEDS TO INDICATE WHAT IS THE AGE GROUP SELECTION PREFERENCE OF THESE PLAYERS.

The above situation has caused me unnecessary and excessive time  issues for which I have little appetite.

You co-operation is appreciated.

Prep for IPT 2021 games update

We are in the final stretch to IPT 2021. There has been a little confusion about the next few weeks. Here is some clarity:

  • If you made yourself available for the IPT, then you are in either at 60+, 65+ or 70+ side. The age you are at the end of the next year is what is counted.
    • All players (who made themselves available) less than 65 (minus a few exceptions) are in the 60+ side. Trevor or John Cadman should have emailed you already. These players will play in White for the next three weeks.
    • All other players who made themselves available, playing in Blue (bring white down just in case). Either Warren Hewitt (my other brother called Warren) or Noreen should have contacted you.
  • If you are unavailable for IPT and want to play the last 3 games, you should have emailed me. We have 30 odd players make themselves available, even if for one game. These players’ names have been given to Gary. He is managing these sides. If you are available, you should have been contacted. You will play in either Yellow or Red.
  • Although I have not got clearance to say this, I would say if you keen to play pitch.

Schedule is online, here is a copy.

Date18:3019:30
2021/09/27Blue Vs WhiteRed Vs Yellow
2021/10/04Red Vs YellowBlue Vs White
2021/10/11Blue Vs WhiteRed Vs Yellow

The cost per game is the same as before, R60 per game or R180 for the three games.

WPGM Winter 2021 Wrap up and now what next? IPT Prep, Summer league. We need your response.

With the conclusion of the WP Grand Masters Winter League, we move into the final preparation towards GM IPT 15-17 Oct. Congratulations to the Black team that won with 27 points. Also, congrats to Clint, who scored the most goals. See both tables below.

BUT NOW… We must look forward. And there are 3 points (as in one more than 2) that you need to consider and respond to.

1. Games Leading up to IPT

For the next 3 weeks, there will be two games at the times we have got used to 18:15 for 18:30 and 19:15 for 19:30. Two teams will be made up of the players that are going to IPT in Oct, and the rest of the players will make up the other sides. The number of sides made up will depend on the response we get to this email. For all none IPT attendees, we need to know if you are available to play Monday 27 Sept, 4 and 11 Oct.

CALL TO ACTION: Email secretary.at.wpgm.co.za by Wednesday night with a yes or no.

For all those that are attending IPT, we assume the answer is Yes. The captains/managers will be contacting you shortly.

2. Dispensation form

Those players not going to IPT but who want to be considered for selection for Grand Masters World Cup Tokyo 2021, must apply for a dispensation to miss the trials in October IPT. Any that requires dispensation, would you please email the completed attached form to Rob or secretary.at.wpgm.co.za?

3. Summer League

The scheduled start of the Summer League is the first week of November. We need to know are you available, which is preferred, Monday or Thursday? Once we have availability numbers and preferences, we can plan around that and ensure the WPCC fields are available.

CALL TO ACTION: Please email secretary.at.wpgm.co.za by the end of the week. In the email, include Yes with days or No.

World Masters Hockey – Indoor World Cup 2022 – September 2021

SA Masters has been reviewing the possibility of sending representative teams to the World Masters Hockey Indoor World Cup to be held in Virginia Beach, Virginia, United States from 15-20 February 2022. We have set high standards for ourselves from a selection and preparation point of view, and we have concluded that we shall not be able to conduct a suitable selection process within the available time, and given the multitude of current projects underway.

We have been approached by pro-active individuals with a view to organising invitational teams to participate in the Indoor World Cup. These individuals have offered to organise these invitational teams subject to guidelines set by SA Masters and in the interests of furthering the participation in Masters Hockey in South Africa. Please note that it is not the intention to award SA Masters colours to the members of these teams and they will therefore not enjoy the status of SA Masters National teams.

We have discussed this as an Executive, and we believe it is an excellent opportunity to further the Indoor Masters game in South Africa, whilst giving players the opportunity to participate internationally.

We have asked Mark Halgryn, the Executive member for International Tournaments to oversee the project. We are fully aware that we might face criticism for potentially reverting to practices that we have worked very hard to eradicate in as far as national team selection are concerned, but we feel that we have established a credible, fair, and inclusive process as far as SA Masters representation is concerned and that we are able to clearly distinguish between invitational teams and representative national teams. It follows that we remain committed to the standards that we have set for representative national teams, but that we shall give invitational teams the opportunity to play where-ever possible. It is our intention to schedule a SA Masters Indoor IPT in 2022 which will become the springboard for participation in the 2024 Indoor World Cup.

We have earmarked the following individuals to organize the invitational teams:
• SA Men 40+ Invitational: Mark Halgryn (mark.at.jhbhomes.co.za)
• SA Men 45+ Invitational: Greg Darke (greg.at.kathea.co.za)
• SA Men 50+ Invitational: Greg Darke(greg.at.kathea.co.za)
• SA Men 55+ Invitational: Gary Davies (gary.davies.at.pointgroup.biz)
• SA Men 60+ Invitational: TBC

We have not had anyone step forward with a view to organize Ladies teams and the SA Men 60+ team. We ask that any individuals interested in stepping up to organize this very exciting adventure to email me as soon as possible at president@samastershockey.co.za. I ask that anybody interested in organising the SA Men 60+ or SA Ladies 60+ contact Barry Froneman at barryfroneman.at.telkomsa.net.

Any person who is interested in forming part of these invitational teams are asked to send their details with a short hockey CV to the team organisers as per above before 24 September 2021. Should the numbers of interested persons exceed the squad requirements (12 players), the organisers have committed to a fair assessment process to determine the final squad members. I stress that these processes, if required, may not be as stringent as the SA Masters World Cup trials due to time constraints and the fact that the teams are invitational in nature. We estimate that the costs of participation in the tournament will amount to approximately R25000 to R30000 per person, excluding spending money.

We also stress that all players selected for the WMH Field Hockey WC 2022 must obtain dispensation from SA Masters to attend the Indoor WC as we do not want players to withdraw from the field hockey squad to attend the Indoor event. We have no problem with you attending both events, but the field hockey World Cup takes precedence at this stage. We ask that you respect this approach and co-operate with SA Masters to ensure a meaningful and enjoyable event.

For the Love of the Game & Be Safe SA Masters Executive
