Invitation for Selectors Aug 2021 at IPT

As we get closer to the IPT and the process of selecting teams for the Grand Masters World Cups (Ladies and Mens), we need to arrange for selectors. The attached document can offer the opportunity to anyone that would like to be considered suitable as a selector.

Appointment of selectors will be subject to an assessment of the applications received and confirmed in writing by Barry (Chairman of SAGM Hockey), as per the last section of the form.

In addition to the above, on the 4 August, find the Team Manager and Team Coach profiles. This was also to solicit an interest from persons who wished to be considered to fill these roles. At the time, we encourage nominee/s to read the Job Profiles thoroughly before accepting the nomination and complete the last page of the document/s.

By way of a reminder I attach the two documents again for your consideration and your distribution to interested parties in your Provinces.

Applications must be sent to Karl (karl@dhpsa.co.za) by COB Monday, 23 August for countersigning.

WPGM Hockey Announcement 5 Aug 2021

Dear Members,

We are delighted to be back and playing hockey again.

The WPHU Council met last night where some concerns were raised about the level of infections in the Western Cape currently and so I thought it appropriate to reinforce the COVID protocols in place:

  • Firstly, if you are not feeling well, please do not attend practice or arrive for your game. Communicate with your coach
  • Always arrive and leave wearing your mask and sign the COVID register
  • NO SPECTATORS are allowed under any circumstances and this is likely to be policed with fines
  • There is no obligation to play or practice. If you feel unsafe or at risk from COVID then please stay away from hockey. It is your choice and will not be held against you
  • Where possible, arrive, play and leave. This is to be encouraged
  • Showering and socializing in the pub is to be discouraged until we are over the third wave but it is a personal choice
  • If you do go to the pub, try to keep your distance and sit outside where possible

I believe that it should not be committees advising us/ you whether to play or not, rather it is becoming a personal choice as COVID is likely to be around for a long time and we all want to continue playing the sport we love.

From the results of the survey, WPGMHA players is almost 90% vaccinated and I feel it safer playing outside, than going to the supermarket. I trust I can rely on all of you to work together to keep our hockey safe.

On another topic, it has been noted that more cards than normal have been issued in the first half of the season. All players are asked to please play in the spirit of the game and accept the umpires decisions.

Good luck with the second half of the season – please play in the spirit of WPGMHA and the game!

Kind Regards

Karl Luff

Update to all members, 24 June 2021

Continuation of Winter League, 2021

After considering all the options on the table, the WPGM committee has decided the following:

  • The League will continue without any break, so the first game of the second half of the Winter 2021 league will be Monday, 5 July.
  • Play will continue as usual within the restrictions of Lockdown, load shedding and WPCC rules.
  • As before, 5 teams will participate in the second half of the Winter 2021 League.
  • The League will end 13 Sept 2021, giving us 10 game days on a Monday. Note: no game is scheduled for Women’s day 9 Aug (which is a Monday).
  • New fixtures will be posted on the wpgm.co.za site this weekend.

GM IPT 2021 Preparation

Additional to the League is preparation for the GM IPT 2021 will begin Sunday 5 Sept 2021, with practice on Sundays until the IPT (that gives us 6 Sundays). Then, from 20 Sept, a 4 game League where teams will be selected by age group will commence. IPT is from 15-17 Oct, COVID-19 permitting.

Data concerns

With the new Protection of Private Information Act (POPIA) coming into effect on 1 Jul, we would like to note that all communications are opt-in. The Google group you have received this from is opt-in, and so is the WhatsApp group. Both of these are POPIA compliant.

If you do not want to be part of these groups, you can still get updates via the website https://wpgm.co.za.

The database of members is stored on a secure cloud drive. Recently, the member database was shared; please can you ensure your details are correct in the sheet and any errors email to secretary.at.wpgm.co.za.

Baring human error, this database will not be shared with anyone, not on the committee or the committee that has nominated to have access to the data (like the SA GM selection committee).

WPHU League Status Update, 15 June 2021

Many of you will have seen the letter doing the rounds that was issued yesterday by SAHA.  The WPHU Executive have had discussions on this and the decision has been made to allow the league to continue this week. The situation in terms of COVID-19 infections in the WC is very different to that of other Provinces where there has been a substantial resurgence in number of infections, which is what prompted the decision by other Provinces to halt their leagues temporarily.

We will assess the COVID-19 stats on a weekly basis and make decisions based on what the numbers look like.

While the Covid-19 numbers are concerning and have been on the increase over the last 3 weeks, none of the cases that we are aware of, can be traced back to playing / practising hockey.

It is our social behaviours that are of more concern when it comes to the well-being of our hockey players.  We therefore urge all players to exercise caution in this regard.  Let us not have social gatherings just for sake of having a good time post matches.  Let us adopt the behaviour of arrive play and go home.

Please note that each club and venue remains responsible for COVID-19 screening protocols at their venue (as per SAHA’s return to play documents).  We also urge you to please engage with your membership around doing the responsible thing when it comes to isolating and/or testing should a player show any COVID-19 symptoms or have been in direct contact with a COVID-19 positive case.   Players must notify their coach or club management immediately of the details this regard.  Please do not hesitate to contact us for advice in this regard should you not be 100% sure on how to deal with a particular situation.

Lastly, please be advised that UCT have suspended all sport.  All UCT league fixtures for the next 2 weeks will be postponed to the 2nd half of the season.

Due to all the University postponements that need to be made up in round 2, if necessary we may need to extend the league beyond the “final date fixtures” if required to do so.  This is something that we spoke the possibility of in our Council meeting earlier this year.

Kind Regards

Robyn Morgan

SOUTH AFRICAN GRAND MASTERS 2021 Newsletter No 1_25052021

WELCOME

I wish from the outset, to convey my wishes of good health and implementation of sustainable COVID-19 Practices and Protocols to all the members of the Grand Master Hockey fraternity, their families, friends and loved ones.

The COVID pandemic has caused havoc in our personal and sporting lives and continues to do so.

Thank You to all of those who have persisted with your hockey enthusiasm both on and off the field and of not forgetting the banter and messages via social media (WhatsApp).

STAY SAFE

Your committee have deemed it appropriate to provide you with the latest information regarding Grand Masters HOCKEY 2021 and specifically the plans and preparations for GRAND MASTER WORLD CUP 2022 (Cape Town and Tokyo Venues ).

We will at all times endeavour to reflect and communicate transparency and communicate relevant issues regarding hockey developments within WMH, SAHMHA, SAHA and SAGMHA pertaining to proposed constitution amendments, hockey rules, finances, tournaments, trials and selection criteria.

Whereas this newsletter refers to grand masters (will be changed to “masters” in future correspondence and in the SAGMHA constitution), WMH only recognises the term “masters”.

Correspondence from WHM will therefore always refer to masters and not grand masters, the masters age group will be the only differentiator.

WPGM Winter League May Update from Committee 20 May 2021

Firstly, well done in ensuring we are all paid up. What follows are some updates after the committee meeting last night, 19 May 2021

League to Continue as normal

After considering the various communications sent out around the start of the third wave of COVID-19 in South Africa, the committee has decided that we will continue with play as usual, at least until advised by the WP hockey union. Players can choose to make themselves unavailable. We will take our next decision if WPCC access is restricted.

The Second half of Winter League 2021

We will stay with the same five teams for the second half of the winter league. Games may move to Thursdays should WPCC require that. The first game will be on 28 June or 1 July, depending on the game day allocated to us. After that, we have time for six games before IPT, which will allow us to do age group based groups before  IPT.

Rules for new players

We welcome new players. The process of a new player joining is that the new player can play one game for the recruiting team. Then if they are keen to join, their details must be sent to us to be allocated a team. This is to ensure the teams remain balanced and the league competitive.

New player details can be submitted using one of these methods:

Please help with this as it also affects teams hampered by injuries.

You say goodbye and I say hello

Moira has decided to move on. The 8 years Moira spent with us reflected your consistent enthusiasm and commitment to our players to ensure that, at our age, we still enjoy the game we love to play. It was always reassuring to have you on the side of the field ready to assist those of us who needed your attention. You will also know that your humorous banter with the players reflected a relationship of friendship. Many of us will miss being cajoled into warming up and cooling down, but we knew privately that it was for our own good. On behalf of the players and the committee I would like to thank Moira for your 8 years of services to WPGMHA.

We also wish Moira continued good health.

Those coming down on Monday may just see a new friendly face.

Friendliest behind us on with the league

For those of you that joined us for the friendlies, I think you will agree fun was had by all. The manner and spirit of the game reminded a few of the good old days. Thanks for attending.

Thanks to Chris for selecting such balanced sides (on the fly and umping), Noreen and Karl for the on the field organization. Thanks too to the refs that filled in on short notice.

As far as payments are concerned, just under two handfuls of people still owe money, which is delaying payment to WPCC for the use of their facilities.

Now to return to the league.

A reminder that the league table and fixtures are on the website wpgm.co.za. The next two fixtures are on Monday 10 May:

  • 18:30: White V Yellow
  • 19:30: Red V Blue
  • Black has a bye, so players in Black can be on standby for the other teams.

COVID Forms

The COVID forms are a requirement. They are also being used for us to log who has played when. With the forms completed, we can have percentage attendance records and other stats. So please remember to sign in

Scoring and Cards

A note to all team admins! We will have a results sheet after the game for you to complete. The forms will allow us to know who scored (rather than relying on WhatsApps)  and cards. We can expand this to include assists and other stats later.

If you are unsure of the team you are in for the league, visit the website, or if you need anything else, drop us a line.

WPGM Friendlies 26 April and 3rd May 2021
